Leveraging 5G for Smart Cities

Gamuda Cove

When the property market is down, developers become more resourceful and creative.

Last month, Gamuda Land and Maxis formed a strategic partnership to appoint the latter as the preferred connectivity and solutions provider to create Malaysia’s first Maxis-delivered fifth-generation (5G) township for Gamuda Cove.

Under the agreement, Gamuda Land will work with Maxis to fibre up parts of Gamuda Cove with its high-speed broadband connectivity.

This partnership will also see both parties exploring the smart city and smart retailing solutions across all Gamuda Land townships in Malaysia, said the companies in a statement.

Gamuda Land chief executive officer Ngan Chee Meng said the memorandum of understanding was a crucial step for the companies towards developing smart sustainable cities in Gamuda Land townships.

“We definitely see technology as a key enabler in driving a smart and sustainable environment into the future but a smart city is not only about cutting-edge technology. It is about smart planning ahead and visualising long-term growth for our townships,” he said.

Ngan said Gamuda Land’s masterplan blueprint needs to be flexible to adopt new technologies in mobility and lifestyle.

Maxis’ expertise in network infrastructure and services would add value to Gamuda Land’s townships, he said.

Dubbed“nature sanctuary, smart city”, Gamuda Cove is a 619.2ha township that is set to be the country’s first nature-inspired smart city with the inclusion of smart transit system, seamless mobility planning and sustainable landscaping that creates a healthy ecosystem for the community.

Gamuda Cove borders the 445.2ha Paya Indah Wetlands in the south and 1,012ha Kuala Langat Forest Reserve in the north, and is surrounded by indigenous woodlands and waterside meadows.

Comprising more than 20,000 residential units upon full completion, it is envisioned as a holistic township with residential, commercial, wellness, entertainment and educational components.

5G is the next generation of mobile communications. With speeds of up to 10 times the current 4G network, it will mean much more than just enhanced connectivity, once it is available at Gamuda Cove.

The 4G era has enabled technologies, such as seamless mobile and cloud applications. 5G will enable much higher speed data transfer, low latency and greater reliability.

Ngan said the Gamuda Cove community would be witnessing a quantum leap into more possibilities, where technology like the Internet of Things sensors and devices, autonomous vehicles and robotic applications that need a vast amount of data will be ubiquitous in the township.
