Keep in mind!

1. Don’t over-plant — the plants need breathing space and they do grow!
2. Don’t leave the terrarium in direct sunlight; the heated glass can singe those tender green leaves.
3. For open terrariums, water 1-2 times a week; closed terrariums generally do not need watering.
4. Check the soil ever so often to ensure it is moist.

Ever tried creating a terrarium?

For those living in smaller spaces especially, this is a nice way to have your very own garden, which can literally sit on your table, counter top, in the kitchen, in the bedroom, or just about anywhere in your home. All it needs are some sunlight or indoor lighting, water and perhaps some encouraging words every now and then.

Let your imagination run wild and personalise it with your favourite foliage and knick knacks. Add in coloured stones among a motley of interesting plants, or go minimalist with just a single plant species. Tending to your little terrarium is a great way to relax and de-stress, plus it is also a pleasing sight for sore eyes after all that screen-time!

GETTING AN OPEN TERRARIUM GOING

Step 1
Clean out your jar and add a layer of small stones. These pebbles act as water drainage for the plants’ roots to ensure that excess water doesn’t stay in the soil and cause rot.

Step 2
Next, add a layer of activated charcoal. You won’t need much; a thin layer of activated charcoal keeps the water fresh and helps to fight off bacterial growth in your terrarium.

Step 3
Add a 2 1/2 inch layer of potting soil. Any type of soil should do the trick, although there are special mixes available if you’re planting cacti or succulents.

Step 4
Pick out a few of your favourite pint-sized plants to use in the terrarium. Air plants, succulents and mini-cacti are all viable options.

Step 5
Add a few more feature rocks and any other fun ornaments to give your terrarium its own personality.

Step 6
Voila! Your terrarium is now complete! Sunlight or indoor lighting and water are essential elements for the success of your terrarium.
