Meet LAr. Khariza Abd Khalid, Chief Operating Officer of Gamuda Parks. Khariza has been with Gamuda Land for over 15 years and she is a mother of three.
Q: Who is Khariza?
A: A graduate of UTM, I have a B.Sc in Landscape Architecture as well as a Diploma in Architecture. I eat, sleep and breathe green, and am proud to be part of the Gamuda Land family since 2003.
Q: What do you do at Gamuda Land?
A: I lead the landscape team and we dream up greenscapes. Sounds simple, but it takes a lot of planning, mindfulness and hard work as landscaping is a key component of our townships.
Q: What do you do as a landscape architect?
A: Landscape architects play an important role in a development. We are not only involved in designing the gardens or parks but also have to be mindful in landscape planning, and how we create green spaces while respecting the site topography & natural conditions.
We have to be mindful of how the development affects the natural environment. Landscape elements and planning when done right is not only aesthetically pleasing, but more importantly, adds value to your health!
Q: What’s a typical day at work like for you?
A: We manage, design and study proposals in relation to cost and timeline. We work with consultants to achieve optimum design solutions.
Q: What do you do in your free time?
A: I like to paint. I paint with watercolors and especially love working on floral and botanical paintings.
Q: Do you have a garden at home? Any helpful tips for beginners?
A: Of course. I have a big tree in the courtyard at home, which I planted 10 years ago. When i wake up each morning, I open the window, which overlooks the courtyard, and the view gives me a serene feeling.
Talk to your plants! They listen as you nurture and water them. They need you as much as you need them.
Q: Any advice for those aspiring to be landscape architects?
A: Firstly, they must have a passion for landscapes, love nature and being with nature. There are so many trends in landscape design nowadays, each with its unique characteristics and elements. Think creatively, be different and you’ll succeed!
